I was honored to be chosen as a finalist for the fiction category in the Creative Writing Awards contest through Michigan State University in April 2021 and in April 2022. Previous to that, two of my pieces were chosen in monthly submission contests for Michigan State's "Just Write Club" in both 2019 and 2020. I have also been awarded the James D. Rust scholarship ($2000) and the Dr. Ellen Brown scholarship ($3000) in April of 2021.
Thirteen Bodies is one of my earliest writing projects. While I'm not finished with it yet, I have rewritten it three times since I first conceived the idea when I was 14 years old, and it remains one of my favorite projects. After having more experience writing and doing more research into the horror genre, I would love to come back to it, as I am still in love with my original plot and concept.
Thirteen Bodies is a story that pits several unfortunate teenagers against an ancient evil organization with a dark power. |
For my Just Write Submission in 2019, I submitted a poem about how broken relationships may be the scariest things that haunt us for a spooky October prompt. In early 2020, I entered a scary short story about a boy who returns cans at nighttime and meets an unsettling stranger. This same piece for 2020, which I named The Cans was entered again into the Creative Writing Awards Contest 2022 through Michigan State University and was chosen as a finalist.

My essay for the Dr. Ellen Brown Scholarship was written in my women's writer's class. This essay discussed the implications of motherhood and how these expectations were very harmful and limiting during the COVID-19 pandemic. I explored how women have been stripped of all identities other than 'mother' and how destructive that can be to their mental health as they were forced to not only be a person during an uncertain time, but had to continue being a worker, a wife, a mother, and also a teacher as they needed to help teach their children from home. All of these extra responsibilities didn't allow time for them to deal with the stress and fear they had during a difficult period of time.
My essay for the Dr. James Rust Scholarship was an exploration into Nela Larsen's novel The Passing, coupled with the effects of sexuality and racial passing. |
